The nationwide initiative is designed to help families experience the outdoors. Missouri State Parks will participate with special events in the Kansas City area, including a guided afternoon hike at Weston Bend State Park and a nighttime hike at Lewis and Clark State Park. Families that have always wanted to try camping but aren’t quite ready to brave the wilderness alone are invited to a community campout in Moon Valley Park in Raymore, Missouri, June 24-25. Registration is $12 per person (ages 4 and up) and includes instruction in dutch oven cooking and campfire safety, flashlight games and more. Johnson County Park & Recreation District will host its tenth annual Great American Family Campout July 1-2 in Shawnee Mission Park. This year’s campout package includes passes for one pedal boat rental and tickets to The Theatre in the Park’s production of Disney’s “Camp Rock.” The cost to participate is $30 for a family of up to four, $10 for individuals and free for children under age 3. Campers should provide their own camping equipment and dinner (community grills will be available); JCPRD will provide bagels, fruit and drinks for breakfast.
